If you could solve one problem in the world today, what would it be?:
Ms. Rumbaugh Bowman will use her skills to build awareness of the impact that our actions have on the health of the earth. This awareness will heighten the sense of responsibility and bring the sustainability of our planet to the forefront of political and social agendas.
If you could have lunch with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?:
The perfect lunch for Ms. Rumbaugh Bowman would be a reunion with her colleagues and clients from the past 25 years.
Expanded Biography:
Ms. Rumbaugh Bowman is an information systems and database development specialist. She has successfully trained individuals in more than 10 countries and 19 industries, and has worked with more than 90 clients in both the public and private sectors. She has offered her services internationally and in the U.S. for more than 20 years. Her greatest talent is working with people to form a consensus that results in a profitable outcome for everyone. She has exceptional skills in technical advising, developing conceptual frameworks, managing logistics and resources, applying technology, and transferring skills.
Ms. Rumbaugh Bowman' work has centered on working with people to understand, define, and reach their goals. In the early days, she helped clients build their accounting and information systems while working in the Management Advisory Division of a certified public accounting firm. She then worked for several retail computer companies, demonstrating and installing software and training and supporting their customers after the sale. During this time, she also worked closely with an advertising and public relations firm as the chief financial officer. In 1988, she decided to offer her services as an independent agent and founded Information by Design, Inc.
In 1995, international opportunities emerged. She began working for U.S. agency for international development and the world bank as a technical advisor in monitoring and evaluation, decentralization, and education, developing information tools and providing training. She also contracted with the Harvard Institute for international development, the academy for educational development, and the Mitchell Group in the Caribbean, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Western and Eastern Europe. As the technical advisor, she trained ministry staff members of the host country and worked with them to develop database information systems. During this time she also developed customized database software programs for agricultural co-ops, farmers, and harvesters. She worked with the management and staff members of select milk producers, one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the U.S., to design, develop, and successfully implement the milk information management system.
For the past two and a half years, she has had the good fortune of working with Dr. Virginia Dale, director of the Center for Bio-Energy Sustainability at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to launch and manage the Center. They have also organized and hosted a series of workshops to identify new sustainability research opportunities. These efforts lead to her to work with other groups at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s environmental science division organizing international workshops and a study tour with China.
Her greatest talent is working with people and she enjoys bringing people together to exchange information and ideas. Her interest in social media is therefore a natural progression in her professional career, as it brings new opportunities for people to connect, identify common interests, and to build partnerships. It is her professional objective to help her clients successfully utilize the power of social media by delivering the tools, training, and support needed to realize their goals.

The most gratifying aspect of her career are the friendships that she has developed with colleagues, both at home and around the world.

What Does He/She Attribute Success To:
She attributes her success to her love for working with people, ability to connect with others, and open-mindedness to new possibilities.
Why did you become involved in your profession or industry?:
She became involved in her profession after working as an accountant in the 1980s, when she began working in computers and developing applications for clients. The skills she gained from working with people and developing database applications led to international development opportunities from 1995-2006. Since that time, she has been a strategic specialist for the Center for BioEnergy Sustainability at Oak Ridge National laboratory. She has focused on managing the CBES website, and organizing and managing the monthly CBES forums and a series of workshops to identify new sustainability research opportunities. She is currently expanding her skills in social media management.
