She became involved in her profession after gaining experience as a teacher's aide in a learning-disabled classroom through a high-school vocational program, and discovering that she wanted to be a teacher.

Ms. Garabito works in the same town that she grew up; thus, she knows many of the families of her students on a personal level. She also volunteers for "Friends For Kelly," a local breast cancer organization in memorial of a personal friend of hers.
