Extended Bio Profile:
Dr. Vaiselbuh does clinical practice in pediatric hematological diseases, as well as in malignancies, such as leukemia, lymphoma and pediatric solid tumors. She also teaches at Hofstra School of Medicine, in order to prime the generation of future physicians with ethical medical knowledge and professionalism. She is an assistant investigator at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, working on stem cell niche biology and tumor microenvironment, studying the interaction of leukemic cells and histiocytic cells, within the stroma. She has also done motivational speaking and been published.
The highlight of Dr. Vaiselbuh's career occurred during her last year of clinical work in Belgium (in 1995). A 12-year-old female patient of hers was diagnosed with leukemia and before she left for the U.S., Dr. Vaiselbuh had contacted the Make-A-Wish Foundation for her. This little girl's dream was to fly in the sky; she had never been on an airplane before. Dr. Vaiselbuh moved to America in September, 1996 and one evening a couple of months later, a friend of hers was supposed to pick her up for dinner. When the doorbell rang, Dr. Vaiselbuh told the doorman to send her friend up, but when she opened the door, expecting to see her friend, the little girl, her parents and two brothers were standing there instead. Dr Vaiselbuh was totally taken by surprise. When Make-a-Wish had contacted the girl, she had indeed asked for a flight, but to America; she wanted to see her doctor. This was the absolute highlight of Dr. Vaiselbuh's career and the girl's courageous battle against cancer touched her heart in more ways than one.

In five years, Dr. Vaiselbuh hopes to build out the current program into a full pediatric oncology treatment center, educate the nursing faculty and expand the medical team. She also hopes to establish her own stem cell research lab, because the intellectual battle of basic science helps her to overcome the emotional toll clinical oncology can take at times. The patients' presentations help her to design basic research questions, leading to translational medicine, from bed to bench and vice versa.
