What do you feel separates you from the rest of the professionals in your industry?:
She is separated from her peers by her desire to pursue additional certifications. Starting this summer, she will be pursuing an Ed.D. at Northcentral University.
What has been the most outstanding thing you have done thus far in your career?:
Her greatest achievement can't be centered on one event. Receiving a master's degree in reading in 2003 was amazing, since she was then able to work with students who were not reading at their grade levels. She was then proud to receive an Orton-Gillingham certification and soon after, a dyslexia certification, which helps her to be a better teacher to her students and a source of information to the teachers in her school. She also fondly remembers being asked to teach on the collegiate level, giving her a boost of confidence that she could teach outside of her comfort zone and gain pleasure in sharing her knowledge with up-and-coming teachers. Finally, she is looking forward to start working on an Ed.D. in curricula and teaching. Not only will that enhance her skills on both the elementary and collegiate levels, but it will allow her to work toward either becoming a college professor or a supervisor of reading.
How would you like to be remembered by your peers?:
She would like to be remembered as hardworking, passionate about teaching, and determined.
If you could solve one problem in the world today, what would it be?:
She would solve the problem of illiteracy.
If you could have lunch with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?:
She would have lunch with Dr. Seuss (Theodore Giesel). Ms. Warian enjoyed reading his books as a child and encourages her students to read them as well.
Expanded Biography:
For the first eight years of her teaching career, Miss Warian was content being a classroom teacher in a Catholic school. Then she was presented with a student in second grade who was reading on a kindergarten level. She was motivated to find out how to teach children like her so she began to look into the master's degree program at Kean University, Union, N.J. Miss Warian took the chance to go to school full time and enter public education by substituting for the next two years. After working as a reading specialist these past few years and currently as an adjunct professor, she tells her students to always do their best and it is all right to take risks and make mistakes. It is by making mistakes and accepting them that we learn and grow. She also tells her students that the only "dumb" question is the one not asked. She also hopes that as a teacher who enjoys what she does and adds humor to her lessons to teach her students not to take life too seriously. It is always a great day when she sees students enjoying learning.
Throughout the duration of your career, what was the one highlight that stood out the most?:
The highlight of her career was being asked to give lectures at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, to teachers from Jeollabuk-Do, Korea. Miss Warian spoke about literacy programs in public education and classroom management skills. The lectures took place during the summer months of 2001, 2002 and 2003.
