She became involved in her profession because she had always wanted to become a nurse since her childhood. In 1975, she started teaching.

Ms. Cheramie is a retired medical professional. She was primarily involved in training, educating and management for the Family Corporation. She retired from nursing in the 1990s, but she is currently consulting and teaching for a practical nursing program. She served as an election commissioner from 2003 to 2008. She is also a former consultant in health careers education at Gretna Career College.
