Extended Bio Profile:
Ms. Koelman holds a Doctorandus (Master's degree) in mathematics and biochemistry from Leiden University in the Netherlands, where she was born. She taught chemistry and mathematics at a high school and was also employed by the National Catholic Paedagogic Centers to write chemistry textbooks and diagnostic tests. The program was implemented nationally, so Ms. Koelman was also involved in teaching teachers from all over the country. After she got married, her first husband’s job took them to Egypt and then to the United States, where she became an associate professor at Houston Baptist University. She taught mathematics and organic chemistry, and also gave birth to her son Onno. Moving next to Aberdeen, Scotland, Ms. Koelmen taught biochemistry laboratory courses at the College of Agriculture and University of Aberdeen. Her daughter Elke was born at this time. In 1984, the growing family moved to Adelaide, Australia, where Ms. Koelman’s third child, Friso, was born with a severe brain injury. He was born in a coma, but after Ms. Koelman took several pictures of him using the flash on her camera, he opened his eyes. For a while, however, that was all he could do; he was unable to hear or smell, and had no pupil reflex. He was diagnosed with severe spastic quadriplegia. To help her son progress further, Ms. Koelman studied many different practical techniques for improving brain function, and worked with Friso at home. After she had done exercises with him for two hours twice a day, six days a week—with the help of many volunteers—Friso’s pupil reflex and sense of smell had come back, and when his hearing was tested at a children’s hospital, it was found to be normal. Friso was able to cry, suck, chew and indicate “yes” and “no.” These successes spurred Ms. Koelman to learn more, and she decided to take basic kinesiology (Edu-K) and touch for health (TFH) classes. She practiced brain integration techniques and Brain Gym exercises with one volunteer’s son who was repeating the second grade, and his improvements after three sessions were so impressive that Ms. Koelman undertook further training. She became a consultant and instructor in educational kinesiology in 1988. Since that time, she has continued her education—and her success—in treating children and adults with a variety of learning and behavior problems.
