He became involved in his profession after working for a doctor who was involved with a freestanding ambulatory surgery center. He then became interested in providing quality patient care.

Mr. Guarino has started an independent physicians' association in New York to help improve the quality of health care. The group recently lobbied in Washington, D.C., to effect health care improvements. Mr. Guarino has a 21-year-old autistic daughter who inspired him to found a summer camp for autistic children. He enjoys going on pilgrimages and recently returned from a trip to Turkey, where he visited the seven churches of Revelation.
