Dr. Barness is one of the founding fathers of the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He became the first chairman of the school's pediatrics department in 1972, recruited faculty to the fledgling medical school, built a curriculum, and attracted many of the best and brightest medical graduates to begin successful careers in pediatrics. As a researcher, Dr. Barness is recognized as pioneer, having made important contributions to the field of infant nutrition and metabolism.
