The highlight of her career was attending a banquet at the College of Boca Raton, where she taught, after being awarded a seminar place with other small college professors by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The dean of faculty stepped to the podium and announced that a high honor had been bestowed on a member of the faculty. When her said Ms. Brown's name, the room erupted in applause and shouts, and students all over the room rose to their feet and cheered—all before the dean announced the actual honor. The outpouring of esteem and love was worth more than the honor itself.
