What Does He/She Attribute Success To:
Ms. Schmucker attributes her success to her upbringing and the benefits she has derived from her life experiences. Specifically, she was raised in a Mennonite household that emphasized service and concern for others, both locally and nationally. As one of seven children, she learned the concepts of self-sufficiency, sacrifice and sharing, while having a lot of fun and developing a great sense of humor. Her parents encouraged education, independence and responsibility. In addition, Ms. Schmucker credits being raised in a small, supportive, stable community in which everyone knew each other in some capacity, and where she was a leader among her friends. As a student at Hesston College, a small private college that draws students not just from all over the United States but also internationally, Ms. Schmucker says she learned how to live in the world, received support and encouragement to try new things, learned to think critically, and participated in leadership activities in many areas, including the creation of innovative student life opportunities. She traveled with the choir and ensemble music groups and enjoyed the cross-cultural experience of a trip to Puerto Rico. She also served as a resident assistant. During the course of her career, Ms. Schmucker benefited from what she learned as part of an efficient, effective management team at Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, some of Ms. Schmucker's own health challenges have given her an understanding of what it is like to be a patient. Last but not least, she has grown her skills by working with challenging, diverse populations.
Why did you become involved in your profession or industry?:
She became involved in her profession because of her concern for others.
Extended Bio Profile:
Throughout her career, Ms. Schmucker has created focused therapies for a wide range of populations. She has worked in most aspects of medicine, including both inpatient and outpatient settings. She uses her innovation of Group Medical Appointments, as well as all of her other skills, to enhance patients' and physicians' experience of health care. As a facilitator of change, Ms. Schmucker creates an environment for patients and physicians to learn not only from her, but also from each other. She has discovered that, with the added support of a group, patients in Group Medical Appointments can, in a few weeks, succeed in making changes that they previously had been unable to make in years. Moreover, she has seen physicians experience joy in practicing medicine again; some have told her that Group Medical Appointments kept them from leaving medicine. Patient satisfaction and access to physicians has greatly increased due to Group Appointments. Physicians like them as they can leverage their time by at least 200 percent. For the past nine years, Ms. Schmucker has worked with a large variety of physician groups across the nation helping them incorporate successful Group Medical Appointments into their practices. Ms. Schmucker has also
written, implemented, and supervised a variety of other programs dealing with integrative medicine, chronic pain and chronic disease management. She has helped clients address such topics as asthma, anticoagulation, nutrition and exercise for seniors, memory, sleep and diabetes. In addition, she is an assistant professor at the University of California Davis School of Medicine. Ms. Schmucker is also an innovator outside of the workplace; she started a church in Bowling Green, Ohio, planned and organized a church family camp for McKinley Memorial Presbyterian Church, and transformed the point system used at the Arden Park Babysitting Co-op to a token system that allowed more flexible options, such as group sits and the use of tokens for running errands. She has held leadership roles at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, on the one hand tackling often-controversial matters relating to social justice and facilitating interfaith understanding, and on the other writing personnel policies and job descriptions, providing coaching, mentoring and conflict resolution for pastor and staff, and developing and implementing plans to help the church deal with budgetary shortfalls owing to the recession.
