She attributes her success to mentors, never turning down a challenge or new opportunity, and always loving her work.
Why did you become involved in your profession or industry?:
She became involved in her profession after volunteering on Lake Nicaragua as an interpreter for one summer. She also volunteered with an orphanage and adoption agency. She decided that she wanted to major in social work.
Extended Bio Profile:
Dr. Stewart is the author of several publications and was a consultant for the engineering department of Southern Natural Gas. She was asked to develop the orientation programs on workplace generational issues, and on change and conflict. She is most proud of her work with the Alabama Poverty Project. She is highly interested in poverty and health care, as well as professional behavior in these areas. Her doctoral dissertation explored how professionals adapted to changing health care matters; she examined hospitals and medical centers. While enrolled in a master’s program, Dr. Stewart examined what parents hoped to bring their children through membership to The Arc in the state of Florida. Dr. Stewart was an assistant professor in 2003, gradually advanced to associate professor, and achieved tenure in 2009. She concentrates all of her efforts on teaching, research and service. Each semester, she teaches four different classes: human behavior sequence, human behavior in social environments, social work in health care, and poverty.
Position Responsibilities and Duties:
Teaching four classes per semester, the required human behavior sequence in social work; two courses on human behavior and organizational behavior and community theory and management; Preparing students to assess and understand various community models and teaching courses on social work in health care encompassing policy and social work practice and the kinds of skills necessary to work in that environment and perspectives on poverty starting on a national basis and concluding with Alabama

Where Will You Be In 5 Years:
In five years, Dr. Stewart hopes to continue her work with students in the areas of poverty and civic engagement. She intends to continue encouraging students to become more involved in their professions and communities. Her strength has always been in community involvement, and she enjoys serving as a mentor.
