She became involved in her profession because of the encouragement she received from her friend while attending physical therapy in an optometry school.

Ms. Atkin's was featured 15 times in journals and magazines. She is involved in non-profit organizations concerning animal and environmental related causes. She currently holds faculty appointments to four schools and colleges of optometry and has presented numerous professional posters, publications and lectures. She has also participated on the editorial board of optometric journals and has served as a journal referee and as a guest editor of a journal issue. She serves as a consultant to a number of corporate healthcare advisory panels. She is currently in the process of building a home-based business involving E-commerce, media placement, affiliate marketing and information marketing. She is conducting her various business ventures under the name Optopod Enterprises, Inc. She has been appointed to the Field Advisory Group for the director of VA Optometry Service and its' Executive Council.
