Profile of Dr. Joan E. Clarke<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>Dr Clarke was teacher in Public Policy & International Relations at University of Melbourne in School of Political Science 1977-1985. She took up the position of Director of Research & Social Policy at the Mission of St James & St John (now Anglicare) focusing on children & family issues 1985-1989. Her many publications in this role include "Welfare Forecasts". In 1989 she accepted the position of Executive Director at Prahran Mission, a Uniting Church agency comprising 120 staff and 200 volunteers with a range of services for people with mental illness. Under her leadership Prahran Mission evolved and grew into an internationally and nationally recognised organisation with research, accredited training in rehabilitation technologies and library services integrated with on-the-ground rehabilitation services. Each year over 2000 people with mental illness use Prahran Mission rehabilitation and support services, including mothers learning parenting skills, young adults undertaking accredited educational courses for employment, older adults retraining back into the work force, artists, musicians, homeless people and people undergoing sex reassignments. She founded the Centre of Psychosocial Rehabilitation for Training and Research.<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>Dr Clarke was awarded and Order of Australia Medal in 2003 in recognition of her research. She was awarded a Centenary Medal 2002 for services to the Stonnington Community and in 2003 the TheMHS Inaugural Award for "Exceptional Contribution to Mental Health Services in Australia and New Zealand".<br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>She recently retired from her role as Executive Director but continues her work in training with the Mission''s Centre of Psychosocial Rehabilitation. She also works nationally and globally as consultant on organisational and management issues, mainly in the area of mental health. She is a member of the Victorian Ministerial Advisory Committee on mental health and member of Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health, both statutory appointments by Victorian Minister for Health.
